Microsoft to keep Hotmail with its new mail service

Microsoft have decided to change the name of "Windows Live Mail" to use the older branding of Hotmail in its new name, Windows Live Hotmail.

A blog post at the Windows Live Mail Hotmail team blog says that they hope by changing the name it is 'ensuring that our 260+ million existing customers come over to the new service smoothly and without confusion'.

I didn't expect this at all, after all it has been promoted as Windows Live Mail for a while now, but as it is a beta there is a chance of stuff being changed.

The mess that is Windows Live, *sigh*. I presume that this name change is partly due to feedback from the trial launch in the Netherlands, and I suppose that it is better late than never but (although I can see how badly Windows Live is doing etc and therefore this name change is meant to be good marketing etc) this seems like a bad (but clever) idea to me.

As for the post on the WLHotmail team blog (I've just noticed one advantage of this is that there is no longer 2 big Windows Live products with the WLM abbreviation) I don't really see how anyone can have a 'emotional connection' with the old Hotmail, at least not after they have seen WLH (as I shall henceforth be calling it).
