How to stop Messenger from distracting you

We all do it. We are working hard, doing some important piece of work that needs to be in for tomorrow, it's getting late and you suddenly get a ton of messages from your friends. I've gotten so bad at this I refuse to do any work and be on Windows Live Messenger at the same time.

Gina Trapani, who is a Lifehacker editor, (Lifehacker is big on productivity) has posted their 'IM Survival Tips' giving you a handy guide to chat and socialise with friends whilst working:

Almost two years ago I swore off instant messenger forever: it was a big distracting interruption that stole away hours of my day in the blink of an eye. As someone who works in a 'virtual office' where everyone's on IM, the decision didn't go unnoticed. My IM abstinence helped me focus on work a lot more, but the tradeoff was long waits on returned emails about questions that would've taken 10 seconds on IM.
