Messenger April fools roundup 2010

Every April 1st the Internet becomes a platform of doubt, as reputable journalists and publications all attempt to fool us into believing the most bizarre of facts. Messenger is no different, with various blogs publishing several hard to believe stories. Let's have a look at what we've been given this year.

  • Technology news website Neowin claimed Windows Live Messenger 2010 would contain full screen advertisements. Back in December I wrote a comment post asking whether Messenger advertisements were becoming too obstructive and many users agreed that they were. Maybe Neowin's joke may one day become a reality?

  • Messenger Plus! Live took similar direction aimed at creating negative news, claiming that thanks to a deal with Kaspersky the software would no longer be free and require a licence to operate. With recent news that the application has took a new direction under Yuna Software, the post could well of contained some merit. Honestly, as one of the first things I read on the day, I believed it was true (even if it was just for a second) before it hit me it was April 1st. The irony however, is just to obvious to miss, with the problems the add-on has faced with various security suites, mostly notably Windows Defender.

  • Mynetx's blog reported that Microsoft are planning on introducing paid badges to support campaigns or certain teams you may support. I know Microsoft like users to pay for useless customisation (*cough* Xbox Live avatars) but even they wouldn't do something like this.

So what about us? Well I'm afraid I wasn't around much on Thursday to continue with our tradition, but rest assured it will return next year.
