Messenger Plus! Live contest has finished with 2,242,758 players
Posted by absorbation on Sat 30 Jun 2007 (17:08 GMT) (4795 views)
After weeks of prizes being thrown at lucky and patient Messenger Plus! Live users, the content has finally finished. Those lucky enough to win a Nintendo Wii, XBOX 360 or PS3 will receive their prizes very soon if they haven't already. I'm just disappointed I couldn't use this website to cheat my way into a prize. Patchou, the creator of the program, had this to say:

As the numbers indicate, this event was a tremendous success and the goal was reached: to organize the biggest event ever seen around MSN/Windows Live Messenger. More prizes than originally announced were distributed and all the winners should receive their prize by the end of the month of July. If your name was listed on msgpluslive.net and you don't get your prize by then, please contact me for verification. I'll soon post another news article about what's coming in the universe of Messenger Plus! (something exciting :-) so in the meantime, enjoy your summer vacation if you have any!

The 'something exciting' could mean anything, but I have my suspicions it will be a hot new feature. It's great to see the contest end on such a good note, it became ridiculously popular, and I guess there is nothing else to say except congratulations to the winners.

Invasion of the Robots winners!
Posted by absorbation on Mon 27 Nov 2006 (17:50 GMT) (4439 views)
Invasion of the Robots was a competition inspired by the huge success that was the World's Best App. However Messenger bots did not seem to up get as much attention as activities and games, but that didn't stop entries flooding in. The competition itself went from May 15 to September 15 this year, and over the past few months the winners have been analysed for the chance of winning some great prises.

Mess.be got the exclusive here, and so I am directly quoting them below (I've left out the 3rd prise winners):

GRAND PRIZE WINNER:
Yousef El-Dardiry's LiveBot (add livebot@msgweb.nl).

A last minute submission, but the bot's original features like Extended Activities (use specially built activities with more than two people), the Virtual Earth-2-Display Picture converter and WebIM (show your status or chat directly via your site) were good for an Alienware MJ-12 7550 Workstation worth $10k. Juzzi also won last year's World's Best App contest so this guy is on a roll... I wonder if he has any more bedroom space to stock all his prizes?

FIRST PRIZE WINNER:
Ushapriya Narasimhan's Mother Nature (add admirenature@hotmail.com).

This bot wasn't responding at the time of writing, but it's supposed to help you find and research U.S. national parks closest to you, learn what to plant and what's in season, find out how you and your family can help on various save-our-planet projects, etc. A noble bot indeed, and worth a $5000 Home Entertainment System according to the judges.

SECOND PRIZE WINNERS:
Spleak by IMT Labs (add spleak@hotmail.com),
Mobile Record bot by Casey Chesnut (add MobileRecordBot@hotmail.com),
Virtual Secretary by Magnon Jean-Christophe (add secretarybot@hotmail.com),
Dr Phile Knowledge by Robert Johansson (add processbot@hotmail.com),
and Comtec Travel Bot by Aled Jones (add comtec_bot@hotmail.co.uk).

An Alienware laptop, backpack and a $200 Thinkgeek gift certificate is heading their way.

Spleak competition is over, her real name is ...
Posted by absorbation on Fri 01 Sep 2006 (12:58 GMT) (2079 views)
The Spleak competition has now ended with one luckily winner from the UK. Apparently the popularity of the contest and the amount of guesses entered nearly crashed the server Spleak is hosted on so there must of been more than a few guesses. The winner will receive a brand new PSP from IMT Labs with the guess of 'Marie'.

However, Marie is not Spleak's real name, in fact no one guessed correctly (it's a con!) so I guess we will never know her real name:

Nobody managed to get Spleak's name completely correct although we received tons of suggestions in the name competition! We actually got so many that it nearly crashed our servers trying to get all your guesses out.

Spleak competition
Posted by absorbation on 01 Aug 2006 (4418 views)
News has been very slow recently, well then again it is summer here for me and most of my other admins and news about messenger, well there is none. However, I found something I can post about and what better than a chance to win a PSP.

Spleak, probably the most intelligent chat bot for MSN and Windows Live Messenger is hosting a competition for you to get in on winning a PSP. Basically, talk to Spleak and say "name competition" and she will ask you 10 questions about her and using her dairy entires and biography you need to guess the answers. Once you do that you need to guess her name, and whoever gets it right wins the PSP (hint, it's not Spleak).

Good luck, it does take some time to do the questions and the competition ends August 16th. I don't think there are that many entires so far so you could be within a chance of winning.

Win a Philips Windows Live Messenger phone!
Posted by the andyman on 14 Jul 2006 (2725 views)
Microsoft are offering European Windows Live Messenger users the chance to win 1 of 100 of the new Philips VOIP4331S dual phones (which make calls using VOIP through Windows Live Messenger and traditional calls through your land phone line), which were designed for the European market.

The competition is (or will soon be if not already) available to residents of the United Kingdom, Denmark, Germany, Spain, France, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Finland, Sweden and Ireland.

The contest involves finding three of the green Windows Live Messenger buddies which are (badly) hidden around the site. Once you have found one click on it and answer the equally easy question that comes up before looking for the next. When you have collected them all fill in your details and submit your entry - it's as easy as that.

There are now three bots in the gallery on the Invasion of the Robots website.

As we already mentioned, this new contest aims to get people to develop MSN/Windows Live Messenger chat bots, using the 3 free SDKs provided.

However, all the bots currently submitted and in the gallery are made by Microsoft employees - I guess they are just trying to motivate the rest of us!

So far the 3 bots are:
  • Encarta Instant Answers - encarta@botmetro.net
"I am a smart computer who can bring you the Encarta info you want right in your IM window! Here are some questions you can ask me:
    - I want to see the map of Italy.
    - When was Leonardo da Vinci born?
    - How many calories are there in an orange?"
  • "W" - dubyabot@hotmail.com
"Quotes from our fearless leader." (a George Bush impressionistic bot, answering in Bushisms)
  • Santa Robot - santa.robot@hotmail.com
"Santa's digitial helper! The Santa Robot is currently on vacation, but when he return he'll help you find gifts and get into the holiday spirit. In the meantime you can find out a little bit about where he is and how that well deserved vacation is going." (note: unfinished as yet)
