Jonathan Kay's support for Windows Live products over at the Microsoft newsgroups has gained him his butterfly status as a guru when it comes to MSN/ Windows Live Messenger's various support problems. Since the latest build of Windows Live Messenger 2009 has been released, there has been some issues that users should be aware of. As ever Jonathan provides in-depth support from his blog.
Why is the latest Windows Live Messenger 2009 update forced? - A bit of analysis into why the build has been made into a mandatory update. The argument is that the update is unnecessarily large and long to install while looking like a cheap attempt to advertise other Windows Live products. With no elaboration to why these updates are forced from the Messenger team, they will always be criticized.
Signing in multiple times (MPOP) on a roaming profile with Windows Live Messenger 2009 - Provides a solution to way the signing into to multiple locations feature does not work as advertised. Kay has created a small application to address the bug.
Installing/uninstalling Windows Live 2009 (Wave 3) QFE applications - Kay has provided a detailed article into installing each Windows Live application manually, it an attempt to rescue users who are having issues with the Windows Live installer package.

Following yesterdays release of Windows Live Messenger Build 1202, we've seen a huge increase of users not being able to log-in to their messenger.
If you have downloaded the individual installer, you must install the other critical portions of the Windows Live Essentials Beta in order to run the build smoothly. The essentials suite downloads Windows Live Communications Platform, Microsoft Application Error Reporting, and Microsoft Visual Studio Runtime. The links for these applications can be found below, special thanks to Jonathan Kay.
We've also had reports that the anti-virus program AVG has been causing problems letting users log-in. If your unable to login, make sure you check your firewall settings, and if you're using AVG try disabling it.
If you still cannot log-in to your messenger, please post a thread in our support forum and we'll help you fix it.

MSN and Windows Live Messenger have always been programs that have created a lot of troubleshooting threads, most of them revolving around sign-in issues. Although many of these have now been fixed, there are a number of variables and conflicts that can still cause problems with Messenger. Sometimes a fresh install is what's needed to solve these problems. ZapMessenger ensures the uninstalling of Messenger is done in full. Developed by Messenger support Guru Jonathan Kay, ZapMessenger is simple and easy to use:

In some cases the installer can't be found in the Control Panel's Programs applet or has become damaged with a Catastrophic failure (0x8000ffff) error or the Windows Installer is prompting for a missing .msi file which you can’t find anymore.
With all this in mind, I developed ZapMessenger – the one step tool to completely remove Windows Live Messenger, MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger 5.x. The first thing ZapMessenger will do is attempt to cleanly uninstall Messenger normally and if that fails for any reason, it will forcibly remove Messenger from the Windows Installer engine allowing you to reinstall at your leisure without hindrance.

I've just been over at mess.be where I read a short piece of rather interesting news. Safari 3.0, Apple's update to its infamous web browser has been a public beta for a couple of months now. What made people turn heads is that Safari was now Windows compatible, a first time for the web browser.
However Mac users who use Safari 3.0 and the Mac version of MSN Messenger have been experiencing problems. Messenger keeps on crashing and it seems to be related to the new Safari. If you are also experiencing difficulties, try downgrading Safari and see if the issue is resolved.
The bug is caused by Microsoft's Messenger clients having a habit of using particular web browsers to use Messenger. You probably notice the Internet Explorer clicks when you open some windows, well that is caused by Messenger rendering pages using Internet Explorer (not your default browser). I find it an annoying issue that MSN/ Windows Live Messenger requires a particular browser to work. If you uninstalled Internet Explorer, you would notice many Windows programs not working. The same also applies to Macs.
