Messenger Plus! 2009 contest: 357 winners so far
Posted by absorbation on Sun 02 Aug 2009 (21:20 GMT) (6207 views)
The Messenger Plus! Live contest has been underway for just over two weeks now and there has already been a strong list of lucky winners: 357 at the end of the second week. The contest operates on selecting an individual pixel from a large image that contains a set price prize to spend the Evolution Store. Patchou has gave a breakdown of the first two weeks of results:

After more than 20 million combined clicks in the first two weeks alone, 357 winners have been approved and will receive a prize package. The third week of the contest has now began with more than 320 new prize packages to find; you can thank the people who don't enter their information after finding a winning spot for such a big number of prizes. Remember that if you're a winner, your package will be shipped ground in August and will take 4 to 6 weeks to arrive to your home. We promise it will be worth the wait, all you need to do is to give us your shipping information after winning.

Play and Win: The Messenger Plus! 2009 contest
Posted by absorbation on Tue 14 Jul 2009 (18:24 GMT) (2775 views)
Two weeks ago Patchou released Messenger Plus! Live 4.82 in what was the last planned update before Messenger Plus! Live 5.0. The update fixed several bugs, enabled full compatibility with Windows 7 but most importantly added the features for this year's contest to win up to $1500 from the Evolution Store. Below is part of Patchou's announcement:

his year, it’s no less than 1,000 prize packages that will be offered during the contest, for a period of 4 weeks. Each package is randomly assigned a value between $20 and $1,500 and the best thing is: you chose what you want to receive! Winners will have a choice of movie, game or animated feature for which they want to receive one or more prizes, all thanks to the Evolution Store. Because this contest is so big, we needed somebody to sponsor it and this year, tons of action figures and high-end collectibles will be sent to the winners directly from the Evolution Store's warehouse. You can start browsing their online store now and decide what you'll want to receive when you find a prize in the game grid.

Each contestant is eligible to win up to 10 prize packages. To achieve this, you have two choices: don't sleep, don't eat, don't bath for a month, or, and that’s really up to you, start sending your own unique referral link to your friends and contacts. Your contacts just need to download Messenger Plus! and start playing to win a prize of their own, If they win, the good news is that you win a prize of your choice as well. So, if your Facebook, your MySpace, or your Twitter account gets a lot of visits, or if you spend your days posting on numerous forums on the web, it may be time to leverage this to your advantage. You could very well win a lot of prizes without even clicking once in the game.

Messenger Plus! 4.82: Windows 7 compatible and new contest announced
Posted by absorbation on Wed 01 Jul 2009 (12:44 GMT) (2398 views)
Over the past few weeks beta testers have been reporting bugs on this small, yet significant update of Messenger Plus! Live in order for today's release. The update specifically targets three main areas: making the program fully compatible with Windows 7; allowing settings of skins and scripts to be imported and exported and adding the features for an upcoming contest similar to the one held in Summer 2007. Overall this minor build number has many major updates within it.

Windows 7 has presented issues for Messenger in general

The contest is the same click an individual pixel to win a prize, a highly popular and successful idea where some fantastic prizes including high resolution monitors and top end consoles were up for grabs. There will also be a twist this year in order to draw more users into using Messenger Plus!. More information will be posted when Patchou officially announces the start of the contest sometime next week.

The contest proved to be very popular two years ago with 2,242,758 players

This will be the last major update before Messenger Plus! Live 5.0 is released, which is now under development. Patchou has been very secretive on its upcoming features, but a flood of suggestions has gone his way and some interesting hints have been noted by testers. Much of this will depend however, on what Windows Live Messenger 2010 has up its sleeve.

Customize your personal message effectively with WLNameEditor
Posted by absorbation on Tue 12 May 2009 (19:24 GMT) (4722 views)
Messenger Plus! Live allows the use of BBCode as well as hexadecimal colors to be used within your Messenger name and personal message allowing other contact's with the add-on installed to view you in a unique and fun way. The variety of options that you have can be a daunting process, particularly if you don't understand the basic syntax of BBCode. WLNameEditor makes this process simple with an easy to use interface.

The script gives you an array of options including adding emoticons, bizarre text and of course colors and standard text decorations. Generally, if you like to "pimp your Messenger" this is a script you should be interested in. I mean who doesn't love a bright pink PSM to stand out from the crowd?

Messenger Plus! Live 5 wants your input
Posted by absorbation on Mon 27 Apr 2009 (20:03 GMT) (3000 views)
There is no doubt to why Messenger Plus! Live is the most popular add-on for Windows Live Messenger. It is a well designed, feature rich and a polished application that has 8 years of work behind it. Now you can have your input within the next version!

Patchou, creator of the program is seeking feedback, whether positive or negative, which provides a great channel for you to input what you want from the next major build. Whether big or small he would like to know. Maybe throw in an ego boost for him while your there, we all know software developers crave it.

Speaking of version 5, while I'm still working on the schematics, I thought I could make this step more interactive than I'm used to. The question I want to ask you today is: What do you think of Messenger Plus! ? Do you like it, hate it? I often read articles about the software, or even about myself, but for once, I would like my users to give me their honest, true, unfiltered opinion.

Updated: Messenger Plus! Live 4.81.358
Posted by absorbation on Sun 29 Mar 2009 (11:28 GMT) (1726 views)
Over the past couple of weeks beta testers have been testing a new series of builds of Messenger Plus! Live which bring about a more stable program and address a small handful of bugs. The update brings one important addition to the application: a new form of sponsor program, courtesy of Ask.com.

  • Thanks to Ask.com, you now have the option to change your home page and default search options without installing any program on your computer (apart from the uninstaller of Ask which just reverts back your browser's settings, which you can do yourself if you want).
  • The setup of Messenger Plus! can only ask for one of both options: the sponsor program from Circle Developement, or the home page/search engine changes from Ask.com. Both options, of course, are entirely optional.
  • In the next couple of weeks and months, the home page offered on plusnetwork.com will be customized and improved with lots of features. This could turn out to be a very cool addition to Messenger Plus! so don't hesitate to post your comments on the forum!

Sync your Facebook status with your personal message
Posted by mynetx on Tue 17 Feb 2009 (11:47 GMT) (8265 views)
In those days of interaction between social networking sites and IM networks, updating your status in all those networks can be annoying sometimes. If you are a Facebook user, there is news for you: a possibility to copy your Facebook status message to your Messenger PSM automatically.
  • Facebook Status: Way 1

Way 1 is a Messenger Plus! Live script, made by djdannyp. It works as follows:
    1. Download the script from the Scripts Database, and import it into Messenger.
    2. Open your scripts menu, either from the contact list or from any conversation window.
Choose the entry "Facebook Status > Settings".
    3. Now browse the link within the Settings window, and fetch your RSS feed on the opening Facebook page.
    4. Paste that feed URL back into the settings window, and set the other settings as you wish. At the end, press "Save".

  • Facebook Status: Way 2:

Way 2 is a - oh, surprise! ;) - Messenger Plus! Live script as well, made by me. It works a bit differently, but does the same in the end:
    1. Download the script from my blog. (It was not added to the Script Database because the first script - see above - was already added.)
    2. Import the script; you will be asked if you want to enable the script for the Windows Live ID you're currently signed in with.
    3. If you choose "Yes", you will be prompted for your Facebook login which is not stored on your computer and only used once to fetch your status RSS feed URL.
    4. Now your status gets updated automatically.

Both scripts are easy to use, while djdannyp's version offers more settings, but requires you to fetch your RSS feed manually. I suggest you try both scripts and use the one you like more.

First complex skin for Messenger 2009: Ev0 Cuatro (Ev0 4) (Update)
Posted by mynetx on Sun 08 Feb 2009 (14:49 GMT) (8819 views)
The awesomeness in person, star designer Will Ingles, is back with his newest creation: Ev0 Cuatro (Ev0 4) has been released for Messenger 2009 only!

This skin features an amazing integration of 64 different color schemes, the typical Ev0 emoticons, and an alternate buddy set along with an easy-to-use options panel visualizing what settings you are applying (and making the skin translation easier). Also, your scene is blended right into the contact list.

The only thing I am worrying a bit about are the rather big icons in the upper contact list toolbar, and some flickers when using tabbed chats, but I might be picky and it might be Messenger's DirectUI engine...

Update 10 Feb 2009: Will has reacted on the feedback and released a minor update (Ev0 4.0.1), adding an option to switch to smaller toolbar icons for the contact list...

  • Added hide add contact button
  • Added hide contact options button
  • Ability to switch to 16px icons for the top toolbar in the contact list
  • Fixed most bugs regarding animation and cut offs
  • Hide infobar works properly in the contact list
  • Wordwheel should no longer show cursor when hidden
  • If wordwheel is hidden then the menu button is moved to the top of the window with the rest of the buttons
  • Added Turkish translation of Options panel - thanks Raplex

Maybe some of you remember the “old” Ev0, a binary Messenger skin and a rather big hit when released for Messenger 8.0. Ev0 had been out for a few months, but it came out just before Windows Live Messenger 8.1, and the skin was only compatible with 8.0. This affected its popularity. I have seen many people using Ev0 back then, especially when Will recreated it as a Messenger Plus! skin.

Then Microsoft brought out Messenger 2009 and for quite a while it seemed that'd be the end for complex Messenger skinning. Will proves once again that customization brings Messenger to life.

Will says:

I believe that we met for a reason. God was like you see that guy over there? he's pretty cool. But its your job to make him awesome.

Messenger Plus! Live 4.80.356 released
Posted by chris on Sun 01 Feb 2009 (13:46 GMT) (2410 views)
Patchou has released Messenger Plus! Live 4.80, the main update this version brings is full compatibility with the final version of Windows Live Messenger 2009. When Patchou says "full compatibility", he means exactly that. You won’t find a light version of your add-on here.

There isn't many visual changes to this version, however there has been a lot of things done "under the hood", which are detailed on the change log section of the Messenger Plus! site.

This release allows external developers to modify Windows Live Messenger's encoded windows files (referred to as UIB files), like in previous versions of Messenger. More information regarding this can be found in the official skinning documentation, which can be downloaded here.

An important note Patchou also mentions, aimed at developers, is that Messenger Plus! isn't required to be installed on the users computer for the UIB function to work, the UIB files created by Messenger Plus! can be read by messenger, just like the original ones. This means you can do modifications you want on your own system, encode the files and then distribute them.

Guardian interviews Patchou and other programmers about adware
Posted by absorbation on Fri 30 Jan 2009 (18:48 GMT) (2115 views)
The Guardian is a paper I read everyday, before school, with a coffee, with my friends. During a free period I went online to research into an essay and clicked into the technology section, where I found an article on the Messenger Plus! Live creator, Patchou. Btw, I want to make it clear my life does not involve around being an old man, reading newspapers and drinking coffee, I do have real fun too.

Patchou created controversy some years ago when he was awarded a Microsoft Most Valued Professional (MVP) award for his contribution to MSN Messenger. However, it was soon revoked when Microsoft community members continuously highlighted the optional adware program included in his add-on. The capitalist approach to creating software has raised debate, and the article looks deep into the issue. The author then gets the opinions of similar programmers, including the creators of Stuffplug and MessengerDiscovery Live.

But this is a man who has also outraged millions. His sin? A Faustian pact with dark forces responsible for distributing adware, those pop-up windows that torture PC users the world over. Messenger Plus! Live comes bundled with a "sponsor's program", which the unwary install unwittingly on their machines. They are then subjected to messages urging them to buy insurance, take out credit cards, play poker or download ringtones. To his opponents this breaks a sacred code of geek ethics and the two sides engage in furious online debates. Supporters say Patchou has provided a brilliant piece of software free to millions of people and the adware is harmless; critics call him "a scam artist making money off gullible young Live Messenger users".
