Steve, a Messenger feedback hawk, posted over at MessengerSays what people have been asking for, using the feedback forms. Here is the list (in it's simple form):
- Contact/group unique behaviors
- Support for multiple accounts at the same time
- A Spelling / grammar checker for conversations
- Tabbed chats
- A way to automatically install messenger updates and fixes without downloading a whole new messenger (like Windows does)
- The ability to appear offline or have different statuses for different groups or contacts
- An easier way to invite friends and family
- Animated display pictures or custom avatars
- Stored and searchable chat history
- Better formatting of text within individual IMs (bold, underline, colors, fonts)
- Easier/better search for contacts
- N-way audio/video conferencing
- File transfer resume
- Skinning
Some old faces are among that list. I hope this isn't a dream list again, I've seen too many empty promises from Messenger in the past. Good luck to the team, the list is pretty much what is needed, it focuses on improving on what already is possible.
View the post over at the MessengerSays blogInstructions have been posted by Chris over at the MessengerSays blog and although they main seem complicated (as it involves using the command prompt) it should be easy enough for any experienced Windows and Messenger user.
The program also works the other way and allows you to easily import these emoticons back into Messenger on another computer (as long as it is also running the latest 8.1 beta).
Although it is an "experimental feature" and it could fail or break your Messenger (therefore there is no guarantee that it will work) it should be fine and be a helpful new feature for anyone.
Instructions at the MessengerSays blogSo what do I do? I add the person, they turn out to be annoying, and I just can't find myself to block them. I only have one person blocked on Messenger, and I think he knows who he is, hi George *waves*.
That's where the new 8.1 beta comes in. It is now possible to send a small message to a contact when adding them. Something along the lines of: 'Hey, it's me, you gave me your address in Physics'. You know who it is and you add them.
Can I hear an amen? No. Why, because I, being that picky Messenger freak I am, just can't be satisfied. It's a great idea, so simple, but it's so great. What is the idea? Customisation. Messenger has all the features you could ever want, but most of them are only the raw features. Adding features to features is the way forward, and simple steps like this will make all the difference.
I certainly will be using this feature every time I now add a contact.

Leah's farewell blog post
Exit interview with LiveSideIf you have not noticed Windows Live Messenger, may seem slightly buggy, wait you cannot help but not notice it. Well bugs are being fixed but due to such high demand from everyone, new features must be coded and bugs are usually dealt with at the end. However, we can be sure they will be fixed. Hurray!
Leah, is a busy girl and does so much for us, she is always organising ways to find our opinion, then has to manage her team as well. It must be a bucket of stress and we don't thank her enough. 3 cheers for Leah! I may even start a Leah fan club the way I am going on about her, but due to an interview from liveside.net, yesterday, we now know our view is important.
Also yesterday, was a huge chat with 120 people in the managed beta, throwing questions at the team, and some interesting news come out from that. For example, MSN Today will be returning, the next beta will be public (as if it does not seem that way already) and Yahoo Messenger compatibility is yet to be coded.
I highly suggest you listen to Leah's interview, it reveals a more personal side to Windows Live Messenger.
Listen to the interviewPatchou spent a long time coding the tabbed conversations feature and he should be extremely proud of his work, but it could all fall to pieces, as it will now be integrated into Windows Live Messenger.

Tabbed conversation windows. I don't know when we'll do it, but it's on the list
Clearly showing that tabbed conversations at some point will be coded into Windows Live Messenger. This is good news for people who do not know of Messenger Plus! But is it good for Patchou? It may save time coding the new Messenger Plus! Live but it is one major feature knocked off.
