Windows Live Messenger for Nokia phones

Mobile giant Nokia has this Friday released a Windows Live Messenger application for its new range of cellular phones. In a press statement the company gave details on the program's features and compatible devices:

This first installment of Windows Live Messenger for Nokia Messaging includes tabbed chat windows, the ability to call directly from the buddy list, and notifications of new messages that pop up while the application is in the background making multitasking even easier. "Invisible" login is also an option, which means you can sign in to Windows Live Messenger but still appear offline to your friends – making it easy to choose who you want to talk to. Familiar desktop features such as grouped contacts, emoticons and sounds are also available.

The Nokia E72 is the first device that comes with Chat and support for Windows Live Messenger, while the Nokia E63, Nokia E71 and Nokia E75 require a download of "Nokia Messaging for IM" from Ovi Store. Alternatively, visit Nokia Beta Labs.

This is a great edition for Nokia users to make the most out of Windows Live Messenger's specific IM features.

Messenger in your pocket: Trillian for iPhone released
Posted by absorbation on Mon 23 Nov 2009 (20:26 GMT) (17389 views)
After over two years of development, the popular new IM re-birth of Trillian known as Trillian Astra has come to the iPhone in a notable way. However, one may question whether it stands out from its competitors, particularly over cost.

Although other iPhone web messengers are available and do a great job, Trillian Astra has a layer of polish that is both engaging and fun for the end user. The interface is beautiful, feature packed and its simplicity over integration should be noted. Trillian for the iPhone is rather simply "clean, concise, and coherent". The catch? Currently priced at $4.99 the key question is this app value for money? In many ways yes; this is a feature packed app with a lot to offer and a serious consideration for iPhone users who IM on the go. If you only casually IM on your phone however, then you may struggle to find value in Trillian for the iPhone.

MSN Mobile releases Windows Live Messenger mobile edition
Posted by absorbation on Wed 12 Dec 2007 (18:48 GMT) (4318 views)
There may be tons of web messengers out there, each with their own mobile version and even iPhone designed version. However, the official one by Microsoft seems to go unnoticed. MSN Mobile has now added full support for Windows Live Messenger, compatible with most modern mobile phones:

The new service, that is available from mobile.msn.com comes in two flavors, a WAP 1.x version and a version for WAP 2.x phones. When you hit the service from your phone we detect your device capabilities and route you to the correct version. Its the WAP 2.x version that probably most exciting to folks that have purchased a new phone in the last couple of years as it most likely has a decent xHTML/HTML browser in it. For those lucky folks this new service now provides:

  • Rich emoticons support
  • The ability to view and manage up to five active conversations
  • Customers can change the display names, status etc
  • Full access to your Live Contacts, still my favorite live service
  • Search your contacts, hide offline contacts etc

It may have the advantage of being developed by Microsoft, but in reality its around two years too late. Meebo and eBuddy have been doing this for too long and across multiple IM networks for this to have any significant impact.

eBuddy Mobile Messenger Beta

Along with their new web messenger beta, eBuddy are also working on a new messenger client application for mobile phones.

The application is currently in beta and supports most modern phones and allows you to connect to your Windows Live/MSN, Yahoo! and AIM accounts.

I've been testing it for a few weeks and have to say that it is incredibly easy to use and very useful. Wherever I am with just a few button pushes I can see who is online and chat to them (and more) using the feature-filled application.

Now I've written a comprehensive guide, including screenshots, to show you what it allows you to do and how.

NootMobile is a free service allowing you to connect to AOL, Yahoo! and now MSN & Windows Live Messenger from your mobile phone. The change occurred today allowing the popular service to enjoy the benefits of the Messenger servers. NootMobile is simple to use and most importantly it is free. Great if you need access to Messenger on the go.

As we told you in May, Motorola have been working on a dual phone for compatibility with VOIP using Windows Live Messenger and your traditional phone line.

Following on from similar phones by Uniden and Philips, the Motorola T31 series will offer the ability to make free voice calls to your Windows Live Messenger contacts, which it downloads to the phone, and to be used as a normal phone allowing you to dial numbers using your landline.

The phone will use DECT 6.0 technology to offer better clarity and an extended battery life (up to 10 hours of talk time) and will support up to 6 handsets (whilst only needing one phone point from the wall). It will also have the ability to use speakerphone (hands-free) and to change between 4 different wallpapers and 16 different ring tones.

Motorola will be offering two different models, the T3151 and the T3101. The difference between the two is that the T3151 comes with a base unit which can be placed separately from the cordless handset and charger (which is basically just the T3101). This allows you to have the base unit by your computer plugged into your USB and phone line whilst the handset and its charger can be in another room. If you already have a phone that isn't in the same room as your computer then this will allow your to replace that whilst keeping it in the same place but gaining more features which, as far as I'm aware, the Philips and Uniden don't offer. Also, as you only need one phone jack for up to 6 of the handsets (sold separately) this will make it very easy to replace or integrate into an existing phone setup without needing extension cables or similar.

Windows Live for Mobile 10.7 beta screenshots

Remember the second UK Windows Live Session back in May when Windows Live Mobile was revealed. Well after recruiting some beta testers for it, it recently began testing and now some screenshots have now emerged.

The beta only works on Windows Mobile 5 (apparently it can't be back ported very well to Windows Mobile 2003 as it would be missing features that Windows Mobile 5 can offer) and features include Windows Live Messenger, Mail, Contacts, Search, Local Search; the ability to add RSS feeds, and several other applications. In addition to sending text information, it can send and receive pictures (and take them using a camera on your smartphone), documents and voice clips.

Pictures can also be sent directly to your Windows Live Space, and nudges can be sent from a PC to a smartphone running it causing the phone to vibrate (you can't send a nudge from the mobile phone though).

New page for Windows Live Messenger devices
Posted by the andyman on 22 Jun 2006 (4369 views)
I have just discovered a new page showing devices that can be used with Windows Live Messenger and Windows Live Call. The page features the official headsets, webcams and dual-mode phones made to work with Windows Live Messenger. It changes depending on your regionality to show you which products are or will be available for your country's market.

It also has the prices for each device and a link to where you can find out more about them or buy them online. As well as this, there is a page about the different ways you can use Windows Live Call and the prices of each option (most are free).

Microsoft has selected testers to take part in an update to Windows Mobile 5.0 for smartphones. The update named "Mobile 10.7 Beta" was made available yesterday on Microsoft's Connect website, the portal for beta programs.

Testers are required to fill out a survey that will then be submitted to Microsoft Connect which usually takes around 24 to 48 hours to process.
