Can this rumor be believed? Well Microsoft never reveal release dates for final products, never mind public betas. The fact that this build is expected at the end of next month is also questionable as typically beta cycles don't work to specific release dates (although as there are several products, this may be planned). Judging from previous Windows Live releases we can expect a public beta during the development cycle and it may well be the case one is due at the end of June. I do not however, believe Microsoft will release a public beta on the 21st, it's just too specific.
Source: Wikikou - Windows Live Messenger 2010 should come out next June 21 in Public BETA.
Windows Live Hotmail is currently in its last phase of beta testing and we are looking to launch the new and improved Windows Live Hotmail in the next few weeks.
This was not a huge shock, especially if you think about the amount of time it has been in beta for, how far it has come, and the release schedules of other Windows Live products.
Now the release seems to have edged even closer. French users subscribed to the monthly Hotmail email newsletter received the April edition recently, which contained a little surprise. For those of you who don't speak French here is a rough translation of the text:
Just over few days before it's available to everyone!
The official launch of Windows Live Hotmail will take place in a few days! Therefore very little time remains for you to test before everyone has the new version...
The launch is nearly here!
So could we soon see the first release of Windows Live Hotmail - over one and a half years since testing began? It seems increasingly likely and would provide much needed 'advertising' for the Windows Live brand, along with lots of confusing from existing MSN Hotmail users no doubt.
However several questions still remain, including:
- will the upgrade be compulsory for existing MSN Hotmail users?
- how long will it take to transfer everyone over (considering that it has taken days to upgrade mail beta versions for just the existing beta testers in the past)?
- will there be a new version or will the release be the current M10 version?
- and will the @live addresses (first talked about in June last year) finally be officially available? (along with a migration tool to switch info from @hotmail accounts to new @live accounts?)

Windows X's Shrine reports that an insider told them that Windows Live Messenger 8.1 would be released on January 25th. However there is no real evidence for this, and well, it may be very untrue. That being said I have to report these things, and sometimes I'm right, but I have been known to be wrong. Let's just see what happens in 5 days time.
As we announced on Saturday, the new version does not have any new features but instead fixes a lot of bugs, and is compatible with the latest 8.1 beta of Windows Live Messenger.
In the same news post, Patchou also publically discussed his MVP award for the first time since its active status was revoked and revealed that he will be running a new contest soon, based around Messenger Plus! Live scripts.

Discussion about the announcement
This may be true, in fact I'm not surprised if a new build is released in 3 days time, but I doubt it will be the official release. This has turned into a small game of Chinese whispers, one website has said something (must remain nameless, the info was never meant to be leaked) and others have missed some important information from it. The release has been said to be on ideas.live.com, suggesting a public beta of 8.1, this is likely according to Microsoft MVP Jonathan Kay:
If it's releasing on ideas.live.com, it's just going into public beta, not a release.
Considering this is the "vista version" and Vista will be available to some customers less than a month from now, this doesn't surprise me.
His idea seems logical. Another suggestion this will be a public beta and not an official release comes from this post just before Jonathan Kay's by MenthiX:
The managed 8.1 testers got a newsletter from Microsoft last Monday saying that there will at least be 2 more beta builds (a normal build and one released through automatic update). Neither of these two are released yet, so public release on the 30th is extremely unlikely.
We have received no official word of a public beta yet from Microsoft, just rumours from other sources. Although a public beta seems very likely, don't be fooled into think this is an official release. As for the news, here is what is expected to be in the update:
- New design of contacts, posting of the display pictures.
- Improved safety (most likely from viruses).
- Improved authentication (may be that text value of storing a password has been fixed?)
- Emoticon improvements
They have also told us some more details about the Windows Live Mail release, stating that it "will offer a 2GB storage" as the beta currently does. They also mentioned that "it will also be possible to get you Live Mail in to Outlook but that will cost 19 Euro a year".
Whilst previous reports have suggested a 'late spring' release for Windows Live Messenger, we'll still have to wait and see.

There is also further "confirmation" of a June launch on the product page for the Uniden WIN1200A, one of the first Windows Live Messenger phones, where it says it will be "AVAILABLE END OF JUNE 2006".
