StuffPlug 3 beta review

StuffPlug 3 has been highly desired for more than a while now. Over its long development I and many others have been waiting to enjoy it's vast amount of exciting features. However since the beta release of StuffPlug 3 over a month ago, I've heard little opinion of it.

The professional quality of the program is still present in this version. Everything from the smooth NSIS installer to sending fake invites works like a charm. The program has been extremely well programmed.

The features are vast, and some much loved ones are back. However there have been many other programs doing the things StuffPlug is known for, e.g. the content stealer. These features are not just available in StuffPlug. However that is OK, the features have been coded far better than what the other programs have to offer, but I believe people don't have that StuffPlug crave any more. I'm sure one or two really cool features will soon pop out of the bag.

There is one thing I don't like, the design. StuffPlug has always been known for it's wonderful designs by Rolando, but recently he has been busy, and left the Messenger world, to focus on university. I really don't like the new StuffPlug design. It doesn't look right with Windows Live Messenger, I also hate the buttons that hook onto the toolbars, they are barely visible, and don't get me started on the menu.

That being said, I'm sure design is not top priority, and the program still has the same great things it has always had. Simple, packed full of great programmed features, and makes Messenger that whole lot better.

StuffPlug 3 beta updated again
Posted by the andyman on Sat 06 Jan 2007 (19:10 GMT) (2556 views)
TheBlasphemer has been busy for the last couple of days fixing all of the remaining bugs and the broken features in StuffPlug 3.

He has released another new version (3.0.286) which fixes the talk to a blocked contact, keyboard LED flashing and custom emoticon and display picture stealer features, as well as all the parsing errors and several other bugs. There are also translation and UI improvements.

This is the most stable release of StuffPlug 3 so far, although it is still only compatible with Windows Live Messenger 8.1 and according to TB: "StuffPlug 3 will be compatible with WLM 8.1 and higher. WLM 8.0 will not be supported".

StuffPlug 3 beta update
Posted by absorbation on Wed 03 Jan 2007 (19:53 GMT) (2015 views)
Just a quick post to let you know the new beta of StuffPlug 3 has been updated. According to stuffplug.com the update fixes a few bugs and will check for more system and software requirements, so it will only install if it is compatible with your computer and software. The update also includes 20 additional languages.

StuffPlug 3 only works on the latest version of Windows Live Messenger 8.1 beta, as TB always uses the most recent version of Messenger that he can find to test on before he releases anything. Using the current official release of Messenger (8.0) has some issues which will take time to fix (and you will be warned that you do not have the correct version for it to run on when trying to install).

StuffPlug 3 beta released
Posted by the andyman on Mon 01 Jan 2007 (15:21 GMT) (4009 views)
The first public beta of StuffPlug 3 was released this morning by TheBlasphemer (TB), to signify a good start to a good new year.

As absorbation posted back at the beginning of December TB started working on it again, after having to delay it several times since he started working on it in March.

The features in the new beta include most of the ones we mentioned back in April, May and June - however certain features like flashing the LEDs on your keyboard after/during certain events, talking to contacts who have blocked you and the custom emoticon & display picture stealer do not currently work.

TB has asked people to report any bugs they find in the new bug manager at the StuffPlug website, and any help can be requested at the StuffPlug forums or at our own community forums.

There have been initial reports that the beta does not work on the most recent final build of Windows Live Messenger (8.0.0812) but it does work properly with the most recent 8.1 beta.
Update: It has been confirmed that this beta does not work with Windows Live Messenger 8.0 and you need the latest beta release (version 8.1.0168) for it to work.

We have also been given information by Matti that a new release is expected to be out within 3 days time (according to x2zen). The new version will include the language translation files so you will be able to use StuffPlug in your own language, instead of just the English it comes with by default.

Stuffplug, back in the limelight?
Posted by absorbation on Sun 03 Dec 2006 (17:23 GMT) (2686 views)
What really got me into the Messenger community was when I first discovered MSN Messenger 7 beta, and I wanted to customise it. I downloaded the new Messenger Plus! public beta, and started wondering where that plugin I used for it went. Stuffplug 2 was just coming into finishing stage then (this was early February 2005) and it came with a bang.

However since Windows Live Messenger, Messenger Plus! changed from plugins, to open source scripts. TheBlasphemer (creator of Stuffplug) moved on from Messenger Plus! and started using the Messenger API in his own way. However life has got hold of him and alas, Stuffplug has become almost forgotten.

There is a glimmer of hope, there has been very recent development on Stuffplug 3, and TheBlasphemer has started again (almost) on the project. The Stuffplug website has also been re-designed with a more colourful look the past few weeks, and with university, his job and Web2Messenger, it makes me wonder how he manages to find time for Stuffplug.

Stuffplug 3 delayed
Posted by .lou on Sat 23 Sep 2006 (05:29 GMT) (2756 views)
After 2 months of wondering what's going on, a message has been posted on the Stuffplug forums regarding Stuffplug 3 and TheBlasphemer (here-on refered to as TB). TB will be away for 3 weeks (starting yesterday) because of "Introduction to students association".

As well, TB is busy moving to another city where he will at a new university, so Stuffplug 3 is not anywhere near yet.

That's quite a disapointment, but it'll probably be worth it in the end since Stuffplug always seems to surprise us.

Even more StuffPlug 3 screenshots!

Well I suppose as I have the time I might as well finally get round to posting these screenshots of StuffPlug 3 Revision 109 from eXoenDo's blog, or maybe I should do it now because the new StuffPlug 3 website will be up within a week (or maybe even on Thursday or Friday) and TheBlasphemer will be making some announcements regarding StuffPlug 3 once the new design is up.

Before I get to the screenshots you may wish to know more info that eXoenDo revealed about the beta version he was testing. First of all, after StuffPlug 3 finishes installing you just have to restart Windows Live Messenger for the install to be complete and the features of StuffPlug 3 to appear. The plugin integrates with WLM by adding an icon to the end of the icons that feature on the dashboard at the top of the main Messenger window (eg 'make a call', 'change colour scheme') as Messenger Plus! Live does, and if you do have Plus! Live installed then it will place the icon after the Plus! one. There is also the option to add a StuffPlug button at the end of the activity buttons at the top of a conversation windows and a menu is added to the top of each windows after the usual ones (i.e. File, Contacts ...).

Also, as we previously announced, just some of the new features that were in the build eXoenDo tested included in place editing of your display name, a content stealer (including dynamic display pictures and winks), an ad hider and chat-only names.

Now to the screenshots:

Edit display name in place
Content stealer
Custom Messenger-style status messages
General options

Note: Please remember that the screenshots and information we have featured are from an early beta of StuffPlug 3 and shouldn't be construed as what you will see in the final version. There is currently no release date scheduled for StuffPlug 3.

New StuffPlug 3 info and screenshots

Over on the StuffPlug forums, x2zen has posted more information about the new version of StuffPlug. As we already knew StuffPlug 3 is now a stand-alone program and doesn't need Messenger Plus! anymore in order to work. Also it will only run on Windows Live Messenger 8.

Just some of the new features include:
  • a content stealer: like the previous custom emoticon and display picture stealer but also allowing you to steal winks and dynamic display pictures
  • text commands*: talkers (as in previous versions of StuffPlug) are included and there is also a new feature that allow you to send a fake activity invitation (eg. "[contact's name] is inviting you to start [your text here]. Accept or Decline" etc) by typing "!fakeinvite" then something like "paying attention" (see how it works by fitting it into the example above)
  • block talking*: lets you talk to a blocked contact, or whilst appearing offline (even though that feature is available in Windows Live Messenger anyway)
  • 'mega' messages*: raises the character limit of a message to 5000 characters
  • chat-only name*: choose a different name to the one that appears on the contact list to only appear in the conversation window
  • ad hider: adds a little button at the bottom of your contact list to show or hide the ad
  • editable friendlyname: change your friendlyname directly in the contact list like you can with your personal message

There will probably be more features still to come too, but unfortunately the window open and close notifiers have had to be removed. Currently there is no planned release date (it isn't even finished yet).

Stuffplug 3 ... more news

Ah Stuffplug-NG, probably the best Messenger Plus! plugin ever, seriously popular and contains haystacks of features that are practical to use. I just love it. But alas, like every great free program it could be killed by exams. The creator, TheBlasphemer is very busy these days and has less and less time to work on his beloved Stuffplug. However, he has got inspired and rather deep into his work already.

He has decided to re-code Stuffplug-NG for Stuffplug 3 and say goodbye to using it as a Messenger Plus! Plugin. He now has moved onto his own hooking system and gained a more professional approach to how things are done. Already I posted some screenshots but since then the Display Picture/ Emoticon stealer has been coded back as well as some new features. One being removing the ad banner, but as a quick show/ hide tab. (check the screenshot)

I can't really say much, not because my hands are tighed behind my back, but because TheBlasphemer has not revealed much, but the screenshots say it all. I can't wait for Stuffplug 3.

Stuffplug 3 in development!

Stuffplug, definitely the greatest Messenger Plus! Plug-in ever made. Wait ... it will not be for much longer, it is becoming a standalone with a new, and dare I say sexy recode.

New features expected are developing materials for skinners (Well at least I am happy) and a plug-in system using .com files. Old features still will be coded for example, the display picture stealer although features like larger emotions and display pictures may be stopped due to recent limitations started in MSN Messenger 7.

So, what has been done? Well hardly much yet the project really just started but you can catch up on all progress here and on the Stuffplug Development blog. With the news comes two very exciting screenshots, I want it already, and when it is out it is going to be big.
