Originally started as a personal project of its creator Cyril Paciullo (known as Patchou), Messenger Plus! has many lovers around the world. Truly, a vivid community has developed around it, where people meet to talk about the software, develop scripts for more features, as well as skins for changing Messenger’s visual appeal. I’m sure that you have tried out the one or another script or skin, too. For a program such as Messenger Plus!, its community is an important part.
The role of Yuna Software
With Cyril having invested years of his life into the development of the add-on, some months ago he felt that it was about time to involve more people. This would give him more freedom and allow the software to meet the requirements better that are set by a user base of 62 million users. By that time, Cyril made the company official that he had founded years ago, Yuna Software. That also meant investors came in who currently have the majority of the share in the company.
Sadly, in recent times things start to go wrong with Messenger Plus!. Yuna Software was keeping silent about everything they did. They set up their offices silently. They talked with sponsors silently. They published new Plus! versions, you guessed it, silently. Eventually, everybody within the community became suspicious about this silence. They tried to introduce a community manager, but it is not proved yet if the manager will be able to break the silence that Yuna Software is holding.
The effects that this development might have on Messenger Plus as well as on the community are immense, as Yuna Software does not seem to care much about the user base. In the worst case, Plus! will become so ad-bloated and uninteresting that it will lose most of its users. Users like you.
There is a way
What can we do to help that Messenger Plus! stays what it is? Messenger Plus!’s original creator, Cyril Paciullo, tells us:
Email support@yunasoftware.com if you have any issue. All the emails are forwarded to the appropriate people.
What could such a mail contain? Here are some ideas for you.
- Tell Yuna Software why you are using Messenger Plus!
- Why did you originally use it?
- Has Messenger Plus! become better over time? How so?
- How did you learn about the software? From a friend?
- How would you feel if there were no scripts nor skins anymore?
- Would you like advertisements integrated into Messenger Plus?
- Send your personal message to support@yunasoftware.com.
- (If you want, send me a copy [CC to yuna@mynetx.net] that I can archive, but that’s up to you.)
You are part of what makes Messenger Plus! successful.
It is up to you what its future is going to be like.

Specifics are somewhat obscure, as Patchou himself created this company some years ago. What does appear to be the case is his control over development and management of the software and its community. Maybe this can be considered a buy-out of Messenger Plus! although this idea certainly lack clarity.
So what do we know? Well yesterday Patchou sent out a lengthy email to his beta tester team to elaborate on the new developers role and sponsor strategies for his Messenger extension. It appears he will be developing the next milestone of the software (it is his code and he has the contextual knowledge of the Messenger API), however his control over the approach appears to have been narrowed.
I need all of you to understand that I am not personally associated with Messenger Plus! anymore.
This simple statement summarizes the situation at hand and although Patchou can't explain the reasons why in explicit detail for legal reasons, it is important to understand Messenger Plus! Live is no longer Patchou's project and will be taking on a new direction.
A snowball effect?
The reaction within the Messenger community has been understandably negative. Patchou has established the largest MSN/ Windows Live Messenger community and this situation coupled with its decline in recent years may lead it to abscond altogether. It is Messenger Plus! that is responsible for the new acceleration of skin and script developers as well as establishing some household names within the Messenger community. Willz has since expressed concern over whether to continue developing skins:
At the moment things aren't really crystal clear so I can't really 100% judge the situation. But there have been recent developments (ones that I choose not to disclose) which have started to make me doubt that I will continue to skin in 2010.

Patchou has established the largest Messenger community and this situation coupled
with its decline in recent years may lead it to abscond altogether
I too have noticed a decline in Messenger developers. Similar websites to ours have either been closed or neglected and to be honest we face similar problems. The threat of substitute services such as social networking websites has led to a diminution to the popularity of IM in general (with the exception of online web messengers). I personally find it laborious to find the time for Messenger Stuff as within the past as do my admins. It may be a despondent fact to face but the Windows Live Messenger community has been experiencing a piecemeal downturn for years.
This could however be a great thing
Looking to a more optimistic side, this could mean great things for Messenger Plus! Live. With a dedicated team of developers, more features can be implemented and the time-frame between releases could be shortened. We have yet to see what Yuna Software has to offer, so lets presume the best and judge them on their results, it could be the thing the Messenger community needs.

Background Changer is a Messenger Plus! Live script that easily allows you to browse and select an image to use as a background. Created by Veggie and CookieRevised, this script is well written and easy to use. Its simplicity should not be underestimated, particularly if you love to customize Messenger to make it your own.

Update your Twitter status through conservation windows
There are essentially two ways to achieve this. You can use either Twitter Plus! or add Messenger bot twitt'd. Twitt'd does not require any add-ons in order to function, but Twitter Plus! is quicker to use as you only need to type "/twitter" followed by your message.
Download Twitter Plus!
Visit the Twitt'd bot websiteSync your personal message with your Twitter status
It is possible to sync what you write on Twitter with Windows Live Messenger, and when you change your Messenger personal message to show up on your Twitter profile. Use Twitter Psm Pusher to update your Twitter status using your personal message or Twitter2PSM to sync your latest Twitter and make it show up as your personal message. There is also Twit2MSN which appears to be a good all-rounder at this function.
Download Twitter Psm Pusher
Download Twitter2PSM
Download Twit2MSNView your friend's latest tweets
Twit4Live like Twitter Plus! allows you to update your status on twitter, but it also allows you to view tweets and send them to your contacts as well set as your PSM. Overall this script is a good all-rounder, yet contains the specific function to receive toast pop-up notifications of other Twitter users you are currently following.
Download Twit4LivePost your currently playing music track to Twitter
Windows Live Messenger contains the feature "Now Playing" which allows you to sync whatever your playing on your computer with your personal message. Twitter Music syncs this with Twitter by adding a new tweet with each track played.
Download TwitterMusicSo there is the definitive list of applications to enchant your Twitter experience within Windows Live Messenger. I suggest giving all of these a go to see what works for you, as many of these have similar features/functions and one will generally out-perform the other.

- Anti-Virus: detects and blocks infected links sent by virus in conversation windows.
- Anti-Phishing: detects and blocks phishing links sent by virus in conversation windows.
- Anti-Spam: blocks annoying spam messages sent by your contacts.
- Anti-Flood: detects flood attacks and block the authors.
- Anti-Freeze: block messages that make old messenger's versions crash.
- Anti-Copy: notifies you if one of your Messenger's contacts copy your Nickname.
- Anti-Bot: notifies you if you're chatting with a Bot.
- Anti-Hackers: notifies you if you're chatting with an Unsafe contact.
What I particularly like about WLM Safe is the care and attention to detail. This is a well coded and polished script that is impeccably designed and non-obstructive to the user. Moreover it does everything you would expect it to do and can even keep a log of the threats it has helped you to avoid. I cannot recommend using this script more. It is a must have for any Windows Live Messenger user.

Facebook Status Checker
This handy script will display a toast pop-up message each time you receive a new notification or update on your Facebook home page. Very useful for Facebook addicts who want to see what their friends are doing as soon as it happens.

Syncing your Windows Live Messenger personal message and your most recent Facebook status has never been easier. Each time you update your status this script will automatically sync it between applications. Very cool.

LiveScratcher: "A modular extension platform for Messenger"
TheBlasphemer's latest project is an add-on for Windows Live Messenger that will add the ability to quickly add new features or functionality. The name is a made up combination of Live Scriptable Patcher. It is something I'm personality interested in and so should any developer for Windows Live Messenger. In a recent post on his blog TheBlasphemer expanded on its recent development:
For now I'm aiming for something that is on-par with Messenger Plus!'s scripting, but once I reach that I hope to keep expanding and surpass it greatly. One of the advantages I have is the extensibility. Each package can export certain functionality, and as such anyone is free to extend the API as they wish. Someone could make a package solely dedicated to communicating with facebook or twitter, and other developers can then use those packages from their scripts, for example creating a script that keeps your facebook or twitter friends updated on how many contacts you have.
I suggest giving the full post a read to know and understand the features LiveScratcher will offer. If you think you may use the program any time drop TheBlasphemer a message or comment and you may be able to beta test the application. Make sure to subscribe to the RSS feed so not to miss any future updates.
StuffPlug 4: A no-show?
Details of an upcoming StuffPlug are rather difficult to find, simply because the program is not activity being developed. It should be noted TheBlasphemer attends a prestigious university and undertakes a demanding course and this takes a lot out of his time. LiveScratcher is being developed in his summer break and it will most likely be the case StuffPlug will receive no updates this year. With it being over 18 months since StuffPlug 3.5.590 was released and no compatible program available for Windows Live Messenger 2009 it simply may be the case of making the current version compatible. Below is his response when I asked him this very question:
StuffPlug 3 was a pretty big mess to start with. I could cope with minor upgrades like 8.0 to 8.5. I relied heavily on certain stuff in messenger that got taken out or majorly overhauled in Messenger 9, like the UIFile parser or the way data binding worked, that I would need to re-write so many parts of StuffPlug3 to get it to work. I think it's better to start from scratch on something new.
I then asked him if he could see himself having time for StuffPlug. His response is as follows:
Well, I'm trying to. Lately I'd been very busy juggling between University and having a social life, but I've got one month holiday (= this month, July) where I haven't planned anything else, and hope to get some major work done. Staying at my parents (= no need to worry about food, laundry, or other distractions) definitely helps to.
I'm not sure what happens after July though.
Maybe I'll end up staying motivated as I've got something more tangible at that point, maybe I'll be too busy with uni and social life as before, I never really know for sure.
In a recent interview with mynetx he had this to say when addressed about StuffPlug 4:
Yes, hopefully at some point :) My slogan while developing is "Hmm, I wonder if I can do this better ...
We must appreciate that unlike Patchou with Messenger Plus! Live, TheBlasphemer does not devote all his time into StuffPlug and this obviously limits its development. Still however, the fact that he still wants to continue and is willing to make time for the program is nothing but a positive thing. In short StuffPlug is still alive, but it may be a while before it starts kicking.
Until then Messenger developers in particular can get excited about LiveScratcher, something which shall provide a worthwhile asset to anyone wanting to add inspiration to Microsoft's IM client.

The script gives you an array of options including adding emoticons, bizarre text and of course colors and standard text decorations. Generally, if you like to "pimp your Messenger" this is a script you should be interested in. I mean who doesn't love a bright pink PSM to stand out from the crowd?

Download WLNameEditor script for Messenger Plus! Live- Facebook Status: Way 1
Way 1 is a Messenger Plus! Live script, made by djdannyp. It works as follows:- Download the script from the Scripts Database, and import it into Messenger.
- Open your scripts menu, either from the contact list or from any conversation window.
Choose the entry "Facebook Status > Settings". - Now browse the link within the Settings window, and fetch your RSS feed on the opening Facebook page.
- Paste that feed URL back into the settings window, and set the other settings as you wish. At the end, press "Save".

- Facebook Status: Way 2:
Way 2 is a - oh, surprise! ;) - Messenger Plus! Live script as well, made by me. It works a bit differently, but does the same in the end:- Download the script from my blog. (It was not added to the Script Database because the first script - see above - was already added.)
- Import the script; you will be asked if you want to enable the script for the Windows Live ID you're currently signed in with.
- If you choose "Yes", you will be prompted for your Facebook login which is not stored on your computer and only used once to fetch your status RSS feed URL.
- Now your status gets updated automatically.

Both scripts are easy to use, while djdannyp's version offers more settings, but requires you to fetch your RSS feed manually. I suggest you try both scripts and use the one you like more.

A new version of Messenger Plus! is now available for download! Many things have been updated in version 4.60 but if you’re not a script or a skin developer, chances are you won’t see much difference compared with the last update. Still, among the improvements you’ll notice that WMA sound files can be selected for Custom Notifications, all the extra Plus! features now work fine in Mobile Device chat windows, and notification popups are now shown in a better way.
If you're a script developer, you’ll find many new functions of interest in this release, like UploadFileFTP, GetElementPos, ExtractFromZIP and support for synchronous callbacks with GetCallbackPtr. Skin developers will enjoy even more improvements, like DateRange restrictions to make your skin change depending on the current date, advanced new features for Color resources to create customized colorization values and gradient colors, the addition of Font elements to distribute and use special fonts in your skin, the possibility to create a separate About Box window, Environment tags for PlusSkin elements to create conditions based on things like the current version of Messenger, and more! Just check the Change Log and download the latest version of the documentations to see it all...read more
